Spider Veins
What are spider veins?
Spider veins are the small, bundle-like, bluish-red extensions of surface veins just under the skin.
How do spider veins develop?
The tendency for developing spider veins is hereditary. The reason is a general weakness of the connective tissues.
The most typical contributing factors are lack of movement, being overweight, excessive standing (e.g., a salesperson), excessive sitting (e.g., an office worker) and smoking. Spider veins are often the first sign of a true weakness of the veins, which can lead to varicose veins.
Must spider veins be treated?
Spider veins are harmless and only an aesthetic annoyance. Although they do not cause discomfort, many women choose to have them eliminated for aesthetic reasons. Therefore, a careful diagnosis should be undertaken, since by this means it can be established whether or not varicose veins cause spider veins. In the case of actual varicose veins, special treatment is often required.
How are spider veins treated?
With the treatment of varicose veins, two different procedures can successfully be used. Depending on the diameter of the spider veins, the elegant laser treatment or the sclerotherapy, or a combination of both are offered. Through laser energy, the tiniest blood vessels are closed. In sclerotherapy, a sclero-liquid is injected into the extended vein, provoking a stimulation of the vein wall. A biochemical rebuilding process then leads to the closing of the blood vessel, which, after some time is converted into a band of connecting tissue. One calls this process sclerosis. The band of connecting tissue is in contrast to the blood vessel no longer visible.
With both procedures usually 2-3 sessions are sufficient.
What does the treatment cost?
We offer you this therapy, which is not covered by the compulsory health insurances, as a private, alternative service in the framework of the fee schedule for physicians (GOÄ). The costs depend on the size of the area treated and the number of sessions required.
